Nog meer geel.../ Even more yellow...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes I know, it's starting to look like an obsession, but I just can't get enough of it. It ain't easy to get that 'perfect shot', so I keep on trying. There's also quite a lot of distraction from the main subject, Roe Deer. There are Eurasian Hobby's hunting in the sky, displaying there acrobatic skills to catch insects and birds above the heathland. And there are people walking, running, and cycling who make noise or let their dogs run around  unleashed, and by doing so disturb the animals I'm trying to photograph. They obstruct your view or worse, ask you in a loud voice if you've 'seen anything interesting'. The answer; 'no nothing interesting', is my best bet on being left alone...:-)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Earlier I wrote about the characters and habits of individual animals. This buck is of the ADHD type. It doesn't stand still for more than two minutes and it is always chasing females, even outside the rut period. It feeds on the Broom now and then and is constantly marking its territory by rubbing its head against brushes and trees to leave behind its scent. If you quietly sit and wait, and are lucky enough, it'll come your way eventually because it's curious also. This doesn't last though, so you got to be ready for that shot...

-  It crosses the path to go after the scent...
Hem volgen in de dichte Brem valt niet mee - Following it in the thick brushes is hard

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once the buck has disappeared out of sight I try to visualize how to capture the landscape. In the distance Scottish Highlanders are foraging between the Broom brushes. Here in this patch of heathland there's also one of the biggest and best kept urn-fields in the Netherlands from the Bronze age (3000 – 800 B.C.) with 14 burial mounds spread across the heathland. Interesting story, but a burial mound alone isn't a good enough subject for an interesting photo... Then suddenly a Scottish Highlander appears on one of the mounds and as a bonus the sun breaks through the clouds and lights up the flowering Broom brushes in the foreground! Pure desecration, but in this case I don't mind!

In the top right corner of the picture there's a spot which you may find distraccting. It's a Eurasian Hobby hunting. More about this great bird of prey in a future blog.

Meer geel.../More yellow

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The yellow flowering Broom keeps challenging me lately. If you visit the same places time after time and photograph Roe Deer for days, you get more ambitious and critical of your work. Finding them isn't that hard, but to find them at an interesting spot with a nice background, at the right time with beautiful light, and capture an interesting pose or action is a different story. You also learn to recognize the characters and habits of individual animals. Of these Roe Deer I know where I can find them and how they react when they see me. Some of them only look up briefly when I arrive and let me get quite close as long as I move slowly and don't make any sudden movements or noises. Others are more cautious and like to keep me at a safe distance. Sneaking up on them never works. If you do, and then startle them even by the sound of your shutter, they'll run and you'll never get a good shot. If they see you coming they're usually more at ease and only look up once in a while to check if you're keeping your distance. If you respect their personal space you can get great shots without disturbing them...

- A photo doesn't always have to be 'clean'. The grass doesn't disturb me at all, I think it adds mood to the scene.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It doesn't always have to be a bright sunny day to get great pictures. On the contrary, the mood and light is often better when it's cloudy. Also the subject doensn't need to be close. This gives a great impression of the natural habitat of the animal.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That is also true for smaller animals like this Stonechat

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's always exciting to wait until after sunset to see how the light changes. This time the cloudless sky turns a subtle pink and all I needed was the Roe Deer as a subject in front of the Oak tree. After a while it looked up and stood still just long enough to get it sharp...:-)

Geel.../ Yellow...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Around this time of the year, in may-june the Broom is flowering in heathlands. The Boom itself isn't exactly a great subject to photograph, but what it attracts is. Around here that's mainly Roe Deer which seem to be quite fond of the yellow flowers. But also the Scottisch Higlanders like them very much. A lot of breeding birds also inhabit these bushes, like the Stonechat which uses them as a look-out post.

Grijs.../ Grey...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's another grey day like so many this spring. Way to cold and today it's raining. But I head out anyway. It's quiet and there aren't many animals around so I shoot some landscapes instead. That seems to be working well in these conditions.
